Woven by Memory: The Idea of Nation in Education Abroad
This volume debates issues that are critical in the context of study abroad. The making of nations is vital for students’ understanding of the contemporary reality they inhabit. Concepts of “nation,” “state”, and “country” are far from unproblematic. These categories have been rendered unstable by the forces of globalization, calling into question their relevance and sustainability in the contemporary world. A paradoxical element of globalization also operates “from below,” creating new pressures for local autonomy and new local nationalisms; ethnic pluralism and multicultural diversity all challenge conventional categories of national identity.
